Jason Merritt/Getty Images via ABCThis year’s Grammy telecast is set to include a special performance commemorating Motown Record’s 60th anniversary, and the Recording Academy has recruited Jennifer Lopez to headline the celebration.

While the Bronx-bred entertainer is no stranger to the annual awards ceremony, the Internet swiftly expressed its confusion — as well as its concern — over her selection.

However, Recording Academy President Neil Portnow tells ABC Radio that he is “excited” for Lopez’s addition to the monumental performance.

“When you have a tribute to an iconic brand, like Motown, that’s a phenomenon that effects all people and that everybody cares about,” Portnow said.

“What Jennifer wants to do is frankly part of a much larger picture of how we believe that we can tribute Motown and their 60th anniversary. So, we’re excited about it.” (AUDIO IS 1-ON-1)

As previously reported, as news of Lopez’s participation in the tribute began to makes waves on social media she was met with stark backlash, namely from the Black Twitter community.
